How to get paid WELL by corporate (and other) clients

Interviewer: “How do you get the London Symphony Orchestra to take part in the project?”

Frank Zappa: “You pay them”.

Interviewer: “But aren’t they a very prestigious organization”?

Frank Zappa: “You just pay them a lot!”*

*(Quote from a BBC program about Frank Zappa (if you don’t know who Frank Zappa was, omg, we need to have another conversation!)

What on earth has that got to do with landing 5-figure corporate contracts? 


Position yourself as not only an expert, but a unique one 

🔥 Because when a professional wants certain results, they are willing to PAY for experts and they will pay WELL🔥

That is exactly what corporates will do when you position yourself as an expert in your field. 

That means that you don’t call yourself a “wellness advisor” or a “leadership” or “executive” coach without adding exactly:

👉How you are different from all the other experts out there

👉What makes you stand out 

👉Why they should choose you rather than someone else

This is not just about your expertise and training. While your qualifications are valuable, lots of people have them. They are the “permission-to-play”, i.e. your prospect will expect that you have them. But everyone else also has them, things like a Coaching Qualification, NLP training, DISC certification, etc. 

Examples of how you can stand out from the crowd

To really stand out, I recommend you bring in something from your lived experience because that IS truly unique.

For example, in my own consultancy, I combine the fact that I am a chartered accountant, former CFO and Big 4 consultant with my studies into behavioral science to show that a) I have a lot of consulting and business experience but b) I am also very different to the traditional management consultants.

I am also very deliberate in bringing my personality into all my marketing and service delivery, again setting myself apart from other consultants by e.g. banning BS buzzwords.

Let me give you a few other examples: 

If you are a wellness consultant with a background in healthcare, you emphasize what you know about healthcare services, bringing best practices without bureaucracy or rigidity. 

If you want to empower women leaders and have worked in a male-dominated industry, you would emphasize that. Or if you have lived in a patriarchal culture you might want to describe how you have overcome limitations there.

If you want to create a culture of high performance, you might highlight that you have led sports teams. Or that you have lived in a foreign country where you learned to look at performance from a different perspective.
